The Federal Trade Commission issued a warning this month about vehicle history report scams tricking consumers into giving up their personal information. It’s a form of Phishing in an attempt to steal your personal information / identity. 😥
Beware con artists are everywhere! You get a call or text from someone who claims to be interested in buying your car. But first, the buyer wants to see your car’s history report.
They ask you to get a vehicle history report from a specific website where you enter the VIN and personally identifiable information. Beware and DO NOT give your name, address, dob, and ss number. The phishing website asks for your credit card to pay for the vehicle history report. You send the report to the buyer and never hear back from them.
In a few clicks your Identity is stolen. If someone want’s a history report on a car you’re selling, direct them to carfax.com to purchase it. I suggest telling your prospective buyer, I’ll discount the car selling price to cover the history report, If they buy the car.
